Finding a job is a lot like being a parent. It's hard, and it may take a while before you start experiencing major rewards. But if you are patient and appreciate the little accomplishments it's kind of fun. And the rewards of finding a job are a lot more immediate than raising a child, at least for me. I'm at a point in my life where I can tolerate a one- or two-year job-raising a lot better than I could tolerate 18 years of child-raising. Not that I anticipate being unemployed that long.
Some people think that there aren't any jobs. I'm not finding that to be the case. But you have to know how to find the right one. You can't just wait for it to fall into your lap. You have to chase it a little bit and then suddenly jobs will start finding you. Being on Linked in and facebook and attending job clubs, small business fairs, and professional organizations is opening doors for me.
I'm spending 10 hours a day and some weekends dedicated to the hunt. I go to jobclubs on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. I've also gone to Saturday career fairs and evening professional meetings.
Additionally, I spend hours going through the 100s of emails that these activities produce and researching companies for which I'm going to be interviewing.
I'm going to eliminate some of my jobclub activity to be able to spend more time on those activities that I think are going to be most productive.
